Why these restrictions exist in Peachland
The District of Peachland is at Stage 3 under Bylaw 1688: the most severe stage currently active in the Okanagan Valley cluster. Stage 3 limits lawn watering to ONE day per week (even addresses Saturday, odd addresses Sunday) with a split automatic/manual hours window, and prohibits non-essential uses (pools, hot tubs, fountains, vehicle and boat washing). The Stage 3 declaration responds to Okanagan Lake at a record low for this time of year, below-average snowpack across the Okanagan Basin, and below-average winter/spring precipitation. Peachland (~5,000 population) sits on the western shore of Okanagan Lake between Penticton and Kelowna; the district draws from Trepanier Creek and groundwater, both of which are under acute stress during prolonged drought. Hand watering with a control valve and micro-irrigation or drip systems are permitted any time for trees, shrubs, and vegetable gardens. Allow lawn turf to go dormant; Kentucky Bluegrass and Tall Fescue both survive 6-8 weeks of summer drought. The Okanagan Basin Water Board (OBWB) is coordinating regional response. Peachland's Stage 3 is the highest tier in the cluster: West Kelowna and Lake Country are at Stage 2 effective May 4, 2026; Kelowna entered Stage 1 on May 12, 2026. Each city is served by its own utility, so schedules and hours differ across the cluster. Stage 4 (if declared) would represent a water emergency with potential service interruptions. Monitor peachland.ca for daily updates during Stage 3.
How to keep your Peachland lawn alive
10 tips for Peachland homeowners.
Stage 3 is emergency-level. Even addresses water Saturday only; odd addresses Sunday only.
Programme automatic sprinklers for the midnight to 6:00 AM window on your assigned day. Use the split manual window (6:00 AM - 10:00 AM and 7:00 PM - 11:00 PM) for handheld and movable sprinklers on the same day.
Hand watering with a control valve / shut-off nozzle and drip / micro-irrigation are permitted anytime for trees, shrubs, flowers, and vegetable gardens. Prioritise fruit trees and food crops over ornamental turf.
Allow your lawn to go fully dormant. Kentucky Bluegrass and Tall Fescue both survive 6-8 weeks of summer drought by going brown and recovering with autumn rain.
Install a rain barrel. Captured rainwater is unrestricted at every stage and is the most reliable source for keeping ornamentals alive under Stage 3.
Mulch landscape beds with 75 mm of bark or compost to retain whatever moisture remains in the soil.
Skip vehicle washing, boat washing, pool filling, hot tub filling, pond and decorative fountain refilling entirely. Stage 3 prohibits all of these.
Mow at the highest setting (90 mm or above) and leave clippings on the lawn. Taller blades shade the soil and slow evaporation.
Skip fertiliser and aeration through summer. Both accelerate decline under Stage 3 conditions.
Monitor peachland.ca daily during Stage 3. Stage 4 (emergency) could bring service interruptions if Okanagan Lake and Trepanier Creek supplies continue to drop.
