Why these restrictions exist in Abbotsford

Abbotsford implemented Stage 1 seasonal water restrictions on May 1, 2026, along with Mission, under Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD) guidance. These are separate from Metro Vancouver restrictions. Residential lawn watering is limited to once per week: even-numbered addresses water on Saturdays, odd-numbered addresses water on Sundays. Watering must occur during specific early morning hours set by FVRD. Abbotsford is the largest city in the Fraser Valley (~160K population) and draws water from the Fraser Valley aquifer system, not Metro Vancouver reservoirs. The city works closely with Mission and other FVRD members to coordinate water conservation across the region. Trees, shrubs, and vegetable gardens may have different watering allowances — check with the City of Abbotsford for complete rules. Hand watering and drip irrigation typically have more flexible schedules. The restrictions are part of FVRD's seasonal water conservation program to protect groundwater and surface water supplies during peak summer demand. Abbotsford enforces violations under municipal bylaw authority. Monitor abbotsford.ca/utilities and FVRD announcements for stage changes. If drought conditions worsen, FVRD may escalate to Stage 2 (more restrictive) or Stage 3 (emergency measures).

Supply: Fraser Valley aquifer system; provincial snowpack ~50% of normal entering 2026

How to keep your Abbotsford lawn alive

10 tips for Abbotsford homeowners.

Identify your assigned day first — even addresses Saturday, odd Sunday. Programme your controller to match.

Set sprinklers for the FVRD early-morning window to minimise evaporation losses on Abbotsford's clay-loam soils.

Water deeply (25 mm in a single session) on your assigned day — deep infrequent watering builds drought-tolerant roots.

Mow at 75–90 mm during summer; taller blades shade the soil and slow evapotranspiration.

Hand watering of trees, shrubs, and vegetable gardens is typically permitted any time with a shut-off nozzle — prioritise mature trees over turf.

Install a rain barrel — captured rainwater is unrestricted at every stage and supplements your once-weekly sprinkler allowance.

Apply 50–75 mm of mulch around shrub beds to retain moisture between weekly waterings.

Skip fertiliser through September — nitrogen forces growth that the lawn cannot support on a once-weekly schedule.

Skip aeration during summer drought — opening the soil accelerates moisture loss from the root zone.

Monitor abbotsford.ca and FVRD updates weekly — Stage 2 and Stage 3 escalations are possible if Fraser Valley aquifer levels drop further.
