UK Water Restrictions & Hosepipe Bans 2026 →
All 2025 bans lifted by February 2026. But South East Water, Anglian, and Thames may face new TUBs this summer — here's what to expect.
It is currently Spring in the UK (March, April, May).
Lawn wakes from winter. First mow, spring feed, and scarify to remove winter moss and thatch. The busiest lawn care month is April across most of England.
Why UK Lawns Are Different
British lawns face a unique combination of challenges. The UK receives more rainfall than most of Europe, yet South East England is drier than Istanbul. Moss is the number one lawn problem nationwide — thriving in the damp, mild conditions that cover most of the country for most of the year. Hosepipe bans can strike SE England any summer, while western Scotland receives 3,000mm of rain annually.
All UK lawns use cool-season grasses — Perennial Ryegrass, Fine Fescue, Bent, and Smooth-Stalked Meadow Grass. The growing season varies dramatically: nine months in Cornwall, five months in the Scottish Highlands. Autumn is the most important lawn care season — scarifying, aerating, and overseeding in September determines how the lawn performs for the following twelve months.
Leatherjackets (crane fly larvae) and chafer grubs are the main pests. Worm casts are a persistent winter nuisance. And the British obsession with the perfect lawn means there is no shortage of products — Evergreen, Westland, Miracle-Gro, and Johnsons all compete for the weekend gardener. This guide cuts through the noise with city-specific, season-specific advice.
UK Lawn Care by Season
Spring (March–May)
Moss treatment is the first spring task across all UK regions. Apply iron sulphate in March, rake thoroughly, scarify, then apply spring lawn feed in April when soil reaches 10°C. First mow of the year when grass is actively growing.
Summer (June–August)
Regular mowing — weekly for most UK lawns. Raise cutting height in dry spells. SE England may face hosepipe bans in July and August — allow the lawn to go brown rather than watering illegally. It will recover when rain returns.
Autumn (September–November)
The most important season. Scarify in September, hollow-tine aerate on clay soils, overseed bare patches, and apply autumn lawn feed. This single season determines how well your lawn survives winter and how quickly it recovers in spring.
Winter (December–February)
Minimal maintenance. Stay off frozen or waterlogged lawn. Brush off worm casts on dry days. Treat moss on mild days above 8°C. Use the season to service equipment and plan spring renovation.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best grass for UK lawns?
Perennial Ryegrass is the most popular UK lawn grass — hard-wearing, fast to germinate, and suited to family lawns. Fine Fescue is the premium choice for ornamental lawns and shaded areas. Bent Grass creates the finest carpet-like finish but requires high maintenance. Most UK lawn seed mixes combine Ryegrass and Fescue for the best balance.
When should I feed my UK lawn?
Feed UK lawns twice per year minimum: a high-nitrogen spring feed in April (when soil reaches 10°C) and a high-potassium autumn feed in September–October. A summer feed in June is optional but beneficial. Never feed a drought-stressed or frozen lawn.
How do I get rid of moss in my lawn?
Apply iron sulphate in spring and autumn. The moss blackens within 48 hours. Rake out dead moss BEFORE applying lawn feed. Address underlying causes: improve drainage with aeration, reduce shade, and test soil pH — lime if below 6.0. Autumn treatment is more effective than spring-only treatment.
When should I scarify my lawn?
September is the best month to scarify UK lawns. Soil is still warm from summer, autumn moisture promotes recovery, and the lawn has time to recover before winter. Spring scarifying (April) is a secondary option but recovery is slower.
What do hosepipe bans mean for my lawn?
Hosepipe bans prohibit using a hosepipe or sprinkler to water gardens. They primarily affect South East England during drought summers. Your lawn will go brown and dormant — this is normal and it will recover fully when rain returns. Do not apply fertiliser to drought-stressed grass.
When is the best time to overseed a lawn in the UK?
Late August to mid-September is the UK's prime overseeding window — soil is still warm from summer, autumn rains are beginning, and germination is rapid. In Scotland and northern England, act by September 1st as soil temperatures drop faster. A spring window exists in April–May but autumn success rates are significantly higher. Use a seed mix matching your existing lawn — Ryegrass and Fescue blend for most UK gardens.
