Tall Fescue in New Zealand

Increasingly popular in drier NZ regions. Deep root system gives excellent drought tolerance — ideal for Canterbury, Hawke’s Bay, and Nelson.

About Tall Fescue in New Zealand

Tall Fescue (Festuca arundinacea) is growing rapidly in popularity across NZ as homeowners seek low-maintenance, drought-tolerant lawns. Modern turf-type Tall Fescue varieties are finer-textured than the coarse pasture-type Tall Fescue of decades past. Tall Fescue’s deep root system — often twice the depth of Ryegrass roots — makes it the NZ grass of choice for Canterbury, Marlborough, and Hawke’s Bay, where summer drought defeats Ryegrass. Barenbrug and Turfmaster sell premium turf-type Tall Fescue blends; many NZ Tall Fescue lawns are Fescue–Ryegrass blends for wear tolerance.

Seasonal Care Calendar

spring

First mow September–October. Tall Fescue is slower to start than Ryegrass — be patient. Spring feed October. Can be overseeded in October if March was missed, but autumn is strongly preferred for Tall Fescue.

summer

Mow weekly at 40–60mm. Tall Fescue’s drought tolerance means less irrigation than Ryegrass — deep watering every 5–7 days in dry spells. Fungal disease pressure is lower than Ryegrass.

autumn

March is prime overseed and renovation window. Tall Fescue germination requires warm soil (14°C+) so do not delay. Apply autumn feed.

winter

Tall Fescue continues slow winter growth in most NZ regions. Monthly mowing in Auckland and Waikato; no mowing in cold southern zones.

Weed & Pest Watch

Dollar spot fungus is the primary Tall Fescue disease in NZ, especially in humid Waikato and Bay of Plenty summers. Small straw-coloured patches spread quickly — apply lawn fungicide at first sign. Improve airflow and avoid evening watering. Grass grub affects Tall Fescue less severely than Ryegrass thanks to the deeper root system. Broadleaf weeds are controlled with standard selective herbicides. Tall Fescue’s deep root system makes it meaningfully less vulnerable to surface-feeding grass grub than Ryegrass — a genuine practical advantage in Waikato and Bay of Plenty regions where Costelytra zealandica (grass grub) pressure is highest and where Ryegrass lawns routinely need annual nematode or insecticide treatment. However, Tall Fescue is susceptible to brown patch fungus (Rhizoctonia solani) in humid January–February conditions; apply a copper-based fungicide from Kiwicare or Yates at the first sign of circular brown patches larger than 20cm, and water only before 9am to keep the leaf surface dry overnight.
