The backbone of New Zealand lawn seed mixtures. Fast-germinating, hard-wearing, and perfectly suited to NZ’s temperate maritime climate.
About Perennial Ryegrass in New Zealand
Perennial Ryegrass is New Zealand’s dominant lawn grass nationwide — a direct legacy of NZ’s pastoral farming heritage, where ryegrass has been the backbone of sheep and dairy pasture for over a century. Modern lawn varieties from breeders like Barenbrug, Turfmaster, and Lawn Solutions NZ are dense, wear-tolerant, and fast to establish. Ryegrass is the default choice in garden centres, with Tui, Yates, and Kiwicare all selling ryegrass-dominant blends. Most home lawns in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin are Perennial Ryegrass or Ryegrass–Browntop blends.
Characteristics
Perennial Ryegrass is best maintained at 25–50mm in NZ conditions. Drought tolerance is rated moderate and shade tolerance low, with wear tolerance excellent. Maintenance level is medium. Winter colour: green (grows slowly through winter).
Seasonal Care Calendar
spring
First mow in September (Auckland) to November (Southland), always at maximum deck height. Apply spring fertiliser (balanced 10-5-10 NPK or similar) when soil at 10–12°C — typically October in most regions, November in Otago and Southland. Overseed thin patches with matching Ryegrass blend; germination takes 7–10 days in warm soil.
summer
Mow weekly at 40–50mm through peak growth. Raise to 55–60mm in drought-prone Canterbury or Hawke’s Bay. Water before 9am only — evening watering drives fungal disease. Grass grub damage peaks January–February; treat with nematodes when soil moist.
autumn
March–April is the prime renovation and overseed window for Ryegrass — warm soil plus returning rains creates ideal germination conditions. Apply a potassium-rich autumn feed (low-N, high-K formula like Tui LawnForce Autumn) to harden the lawn against winter.
winter
Ryegrass continues slow growth through most NZ winters. Monthly mowing on dry days in Auckland, Wellington, Nelson; no mowing in Canterbury, Otago, Southland. Never mow frosted blades. Treat moss on dry days above 8°C.
Weed & Pest Watch
Grass grub (Costelytra zealandica) is the most destructive ryegrass pest in NZ. Larvae feed on ryegrass roots from late December through February, causing irregular brown patches where turf lifts easily. Apply Kiwicare Lawn Grub Killer or beneficial nematodes in January when soil is moist and warm (above 15°C). Broadleaf weeds — dandelion, clover, buttercup — are common in ryegrass lawns and respond to selective herbicides like Kiwicare Lawn Weeder applied on calm warm days.
