Browntop Bent in New Zealand
cool-season

About Browntop Bent in New Zealand
Browntop Bent (Agrostis capillaris) is a traditional NZ lawn grass and the grass most associated with classic sports turf — most bowling greens, croquet lawns, and golf fairways in NZ use Browntop or Browntop–Fescue blends. As a lawn grass for home gardens, Browntop produces exceptionally fine-textured, carpet-like lawns but demands more maintenance than Ryegrass. The grass is declining in popularity for family lawns because modern Ryegrass varieties offer easier management, but it remains popular in older establishment gardens across Wellington, Dunedin, and Christchurch. Barenbrug and Lawn Solutions NZ sell premium Browntop blends.
Characteristics
Browntop Bent is best maintained at 15–30mm in NZ conditions. Drought tolerance is rated low and shade tolerance moderate, with wear tolerance low-moderate. Maintenance level is high — prone to thatch. Winter colour: green (slow winter growth).
Seasonal Care Calendar
spring
First mow in September–October. Browntop is slower to wake than Ryegrass — do not rush. Spring feed in October; Browntop responds well to slow-release formulas. Overseed bare patches with matching Browntop blend.
summer
Mow weekly at 8–20mm — Browntop’s fine texture is maintained by close cutting. Water before 9am. Browntop is drought-sensitive — keep soil moist in dry spells.
autumn
Browntop THATCH MANAGEMENT is critical in autumn. Scarify every two to three years in March to remove accumulated thatch — Browntop builds thatch faster than any other common NZ lawn grass. Apply autumn feed after scarifying. Autumn is also the critical renovation window for Browntop — overseed with a Browntop/fescue blend in March when the soil is still warm from summer but the worst of the heat has passed, which gives seedlings the best possible establishment conditions. Barenbrug’s NZ Lawn Mix contains Browntop specifically suited to NZ’s cool climate and is widely stocked at Mitre 10 and Bunnings.
winter
Minimal winter maintenance. Light mowing on dry days if growth active. Never mow frosted grass. One of Browntop’s key advantages over Ryegrass in the cooler southern regions is that it continues to grow very slowly through winter and stays green rather than browning off — this gives Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin lawns a noticeably better winter appearance. Avoid heavy foot traffic on wet Browntop lawns in winter; the grass’s fine leaf structure is particularly susceptible to compaction damage that shows as patchy bare areas when spring growth resumes.
Weed & Pest Watch
Thatch is the defining Browntop challenge, not pests — the grass’s fine texture and spreading growth habit accumulate thatch rapidly. Scarify every 2–3 years in March to prevent a smothering layer. Grass grub can affect Browntop but less severely than Ryegrass. Moss is a common Browntop invader in shaded, poorly drained sections; iron sulphate treatment plus drainage improvement solves most moss issues.
